MONS made a strong impression at Hannover Messe 2025, the largest industrial technology fair in Europe, by presenting groundbreaking research and innovation at the Belgian national stand. This prestigious event served as a global stage to promote UMONS’s scientific excellence, entrepreneurial ambition, and collaborative spirit. 🏭🌍

Sidi-Ahmed Mahmoudi, Mohamed Benkedadra, and Maxime Gloesener presented two live demonstrations focused on Embedded Artificial Intelligence (Edge AI), showcasing how AI can transform industrial safety and efficiency in real-world environments.

The first demo featured InfraSecure, a cutting-edge AI solution developed with Infrabel to enhance safety on railway construction sites. As part of the ‘Worker Protection with AI’ project, InfraSecure uses embedded GPUs and smart sensors to monitor environments in real-time, ensuring rapid risk detection and local decision-making. 🚧📹

The second demonstration focused on Edge AI compression, showing how deep learning models can be optimized through techniques like pruning, quantization, and knowledge distillation. This technology enables powerful AI capabilities to be deployed on-site, even in constrained environments—boosting both performance and energy efficiency. ⚙️📦

🌬️ Meanwhile, Jérôme Schruyers, a researcher-entrepreneur, highlighted SCENT-ID, an innovative Win4SpinOff project aiming to improve indoor air quality through a smart “electronic nose.” By detecting and analyzing air pollutants in real time, SCENT-ID offers a promising solution for healthier indoor environments across workplaces, schools, and homes. 🏠💨

These innovative projects were showcased under the attentive eye of Pierre-Yves Jeholet, Vice-President and Minister of Economy, Employment, Training and Industry, who recognized the importance of academic innovation in shaping Belgium’s industrial future.
